Bye Bye Africa is a 1999 Chadian film by director Mahamat Saleh Haroun, who also stars in the film. The docu-drama centres on a fictionalized version of Haroun who, after many years, returns home for the death of his mother. The filmmaker decides to make a film dedicated to his mother entitled ‘Bye Bye Africa’.

Upon arriving in Chad, however, he discovers cinemas have closed and film financing is near impossible to secure. The filmmaker and his old friend, Garba, a film director go all over town documenting the cause of cinema’s decline, while having to answer questions around the ethics of his own filmmaking within the local community.
