What are the possibilities and challenges of filming in the context of oppressive regimes? What filmic language to choose to depict violence and oppression? How to deal with trauma and the loss of speech of your protagonists ? How to show the complexity of victims and perpetrators? How to deal with acute threats during filming?
At a moment when social division, violence, arms race, war and the total loss of peaceful means of communication are increasing in so many areas of conflict around the world, we as filmmakers are faced more than ever with the question of what cinematic means we can find to react to and to find an appropriate language that could perhaps also offer counter-models of conflict resolution and peace options.
Elahe Esmaili and Cordelia Dvorák will exchange their practical experiences, hopes, doubts and thoughts regarding their filmic practice in highly explosive political areas of conflict and share examples of their work. The audience is invited to participate in the discussion.
